Crimes against television

August20

FOX is infamous for cancelling brilliant television series before their time. What was once a hip, edgey, alternative network is now just a rotting corporate whore. One of its many victims is one of my most favorite TV series ever, Undeclared. The entire series (one season) just came out on DVD this Tuesday, and since my broke ass got paid today, I finally got to pick it up. I’ve been tiding over my craving by reading the hilarious and well-written scripts online in anticipation this week. If you’ve never seen the show before and are looking for another reason to hate modern day television, pick up the set and watch. It’s brilliant. You won’t regret it.

Why There Is No Revolution – A Bullet Point Essay

July14

1. There is no sense of community. The internet has brought people from around the world together in a way they’ve never been before, yet everybody seems more disconnected from any form of community now more than ever. Those communities that do exist are old fashioned and out of sense (religious groups) and are contributors towards the reasons “Why there should be a revolution…”
2. We’ve been brought up under the impression that the anti-establishment is bad…and we believe it.
3. Our downfall is brought on one dial click at a time, in a way that we can adjust ourselves accordingly and accept it before we slip one click further (see “gas prices”).
4. The push for technology to become a necessity in everyone’s lives causes people to focus on consuming, much to the joy of major corporations.
5. The surplus of patriotism flooding the country. However, this patriotism has changed from supporting ones country to supporting said country’s leadership, who of course seems innocent and harmless, but in reality is truely corrupt and pushing said country into the pit. Events that take place now which would have once caused an uproar have now become accepted past times, thanks to reason number three.
6. Greed, both on the large scale with corporations and the small scale with individuals, thanks to reasons one and four.
7. Apathy and laziness.
8. Even as I type this, I’m just as guilty as the guy next to me, yet I’m sure I won’t do anything about it aside from type this out and post it in my blog. A continuing, viscious cycle.

(As a side note, I just watched a documentary, “punk: attitude,” on IFC, and I felt inspired)

Snow days

March1

When you enter the adult world, there is no such thing as a “snow day.” I miss the excitement of waking up, watching the school closing announcements at the bottom of the screen on the morning news in anticipation of seeing my school listed, celebrating when it is, and crawling back into bed, almost too excited to fall back asleep.

Are they really that clueless?

February14

Surprise, the 2005 Grammys received the lowest ratings in 10 years. Nobody seems to quite have the answer. Hey, I figured it out: (most) modern music sucks. Sorry Clear Channel, you lost your brainless masses to other forms of mind numbing this year. It might also have to do with the fact that there are about five hundred different award shows, at least two per network these days. Remember the days when award shows actually had some credibility?

Are those nuclear weapons in your pocket, or…

February10

North Korea announced today that it has nuclear weapons. Lovely. So, unlike the faulty intelligence that we based our current illegitimate war on Iraq in, North Korea is foregoing any need for a scavenger hunt and is saying “we got your WMD right here.” I really can’t wait to see Bush talk around this one. North Korea is saying they exist for defense against an increasingly hostile US. Rice is saying they have no reason to believe we’d attack. I can totally see that, cause we never invaded another country without good reason…

What’s more frightning are Iran’s warnings that their country would become a “scorching hell” for any possible attackers. The fact that we’re even whispering about Iran should be cause for concern for anybody. These are the early days, where we hear the word “Iran” dropped into the news here and there…it’s not quite time yet for the full flood of propaganda and false reasoning to go to war with them. If the Bush administration were smart (heaven forbid), they’d keep any operation in Iran on the back page of the news where nobody will read about it. Then again, it’s not like it’ll be the wake up call for anyone in the US if it were all over the news. It’ll just be another damn day. Hell, I wouldn’t put it past the majority of Jesusland to confuse Iran with Iraq…it’s only a one letter difference, leave them alone!

It doesn’t matter that the Iraq war is still a near-complete failure, troop morale is down the gutter, and troops are stretched thin. It doesn’t matter that numerous polls show the majority of people thinking Iraq was a mistake. Tell them the Reichstag is burning and the cry for war will be heard. All the fear surrounding the question “Is Iran next?” seems to be justified.
